Job Title: Digital Technical Producer BBC Pidgin Service
Location: Lagos, Nigeria.
Job Introduction: Africas media landscape is changing. It is one of the fastest developing news markets in the world with mobile technology transforming lives, internet connectivity increasing, the radio market remaining relatively strong and Television migrating from analogue to digital.
The BBC World Service remains the leading international broadcaster in Africa, reaching a weekly audience of more than 100 million across all platforms and Social Media.Globally, the BBC reaches a weekly audience of 320 million across various platforms.
Over the next four years, the BBC World Service will be expanding its multimedia operations in Africa by doubling the number of language services from 6 to 12.
Three of the new language services, Pidgin, Yoruba and Igbo, will serve our audiences in Nigeria and West Africa. They will be based in Lagos, working alongside our operation in Abuja from where the BBC currently produces its Hausa service output. There is a strong emphasis on reaching and connecting with young audiences.
We are looking for an excellentDigital Technical Producer who on a daily basis will report to the Pidgin Editor and working closely with editorial teams, will provide technical support to produce high quality output across all our digital platforms in all languages.
You will be required to occasionally go on trips to support field reporting teams in Lagos/Nigeria or abroad.
Role Responsibility: The ability to operate technical equipment to meet the artistic, technical and safety requirements for delivering audio, video and text publishing. This includes operating studios, computer equipment, recording and editing systems.
To support editorial teams in resolving technical problems when they arise.
Recording, ingesting, editing, reproducing and dubbing material, including replay as required by the production staff both in the studio and on the field.
To ensure all output publishes correctly, in a timely manner across all platforms for all languages.
To operate and programme all types of audio and video equipment.
To Install, upgrade and maintain software packages, hardware and production equipment, under instruction from IT staff.
The Ideal Candidate: The Digital technical producer will provide a full range of quality technical services for audio, video and text to help put the best content on air in a busy newsroom working to tight deadlines.You must be familiar with the latest digital production equipment.
Reporting to the Editor, you will be proactive and be required to perform duties in Radio Studios, Workshops, Edit Suites, and on Computers, as well as on Outside Broadcasts.
You will have an excellent knowledge of local, regional and international news and current affairs.
You will have recent experience of living in Nigeria including an understanding of its complexities.
Ability to work under pressure and to react to breaking news is essential.
You must have work authorisation for Nigeria.

You will report to the Head of West Africa and also work closely with other senior editorial figures in BBC World Service.As the Editor, you will provide creative leadership and vision, to maximise the Pidgin language service’s impact and potential in Nigeria, taking into account the changing media conditions in the target area. You will approve content, ensuring that BBC editorial guidelines are adhered to consistently. You will manage teams and resources, taking responsibility for ensuring that all output is delivered creatively and on schedule.
The Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will have substantial experience in a senior journalistic role within a media environment. Fluent in Pidgin and English (written and spoken), you will have experience of delivering output on multimedia platforms.An excellent knowledge of local, regional and international news and current affairs is essential. You will have recent experience of living in the target area, including a good understanding of the complexities of Nigeria.
A good appreciation of the media situation in Nigeria and the wider target area, and how it is developing with the ability to anticipate changes in the market is essential. Experience of managing budgets is required.

Fluency and up to date knowledge of Pidgin.Fluency in English, written and spoken English and the ability to communicate effectively.
Familiarity with digital news production systems and writing with flare for pictures. An understanding of social media is essential.
A willingness to learn to operate new technology systems and to be able to adapt to different working methods.
A good knowledge of online journalism techniques. An ability to mentor, lead and inspire a team of journalists to bring out the best in them.
The Ideal Candidate
The successful candidatewill take full editorial responsibility for the timely delivery of the days output.Reporting tothe Editor, your main responsibilities will include leading on the production, creative and timely distribution of all digital content, videos, and innovative editorial projects to serve our Pidgin audiences whilst adhering to the BBC's editorial guidelines and objectives.Working with the Pidgin team, you will be responsible for coming up with creative and innovative ways in storytelling and implementing them for BBC Pidgin especially for online and social media consumption.

On a daily basis, you will engage actively with the audience ensuring consistency of output. You will be required occasionally to do some field reporting.The successful candidate will have some experience within a media environment. Fluent in Pidgin and English (written and spoken) experience of delivering creative output on online platforms is desirable. Knowledge of local, regional and international news and current affairs is essential. You will have knowledge of and recent experience of living in the target area, including a good understanding of the complexities of Nigeria.
